I remember watching this movie when it first came out in 1981 I was in Navy A School and saw it in downtown San Diego. The theater was full of Sailors and Marines.

Right after The zeros strafe their friend in the water, that initially quiet but gradually louder roar of the incoming Cats....😊😊😊😊

I hate to admit it, but a small part of me was pulling for the Zeros to put a few marks on a Tomcat. Realistically, a fully prepared AT-6 pilot with guns and 5" Zuni rockets could likely bring down a Tomcat...maybe. Not an F-8 Crusader, though.

A lot of the emotional response to this scene was leaving the doldrums of the Carter Presidency. Amnesty to draft dodgers in Canada was one of his first acts. Failure of the rescue of hostages in Iran and his spineless handling of the entire situation. This scene affirmed a sense of pride in the abilities of the US military.

F-14 Pilot: Eagle Control, this is Alert 1. They just strafed the hell out of that yacht! - Why would they attack a yacht? -Their job would be to destroy anything with a radio that could warn Pearl Harbor. -Providing you and Mr. Einstein are correct. Dick, where would the Japanese fleet be at this time on December 6th, 1941? -Well, sir, they’d be off the scope but an educated guess would be around about here. Excuse me. They’d have to be here, up around the northwest sector. - Let’s get this settled once and for all. Have the E-2 check it out. I wanna see if the Japanese task force is out there. - Yes, sir.

At 4:12 when the F-14 zoom past the Zero's and it looks like fancy flying of the Zero's that was nearly a disaster because the Zero's got hit by the jet wash from the F14's and nearly wrecked.

The man on the yacht in the blue shirt is Charles Durning who went ashore at Omaha beach with the Big Red One in one of the first assault waves. Severely wounded later in the bocage, he spent 6 months recovering before he supposedly broke out of the hospital to rejoin his unit just in time for the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, 3 purple hearts and a boat load of other citations. Durning might be best know for his "wonderful performance" as Pappy O'Daniel in 'O Brother Where Art Thou.'

They should have written the script so that the carrier sinks the Japanese fleet and then winks out of existence, as it prevented the USA being drawn into the war, and then flash forward to current times with the USA being a rural backwater with a tiny military ignored by the rest of the western powers

so , just think for a min here, if the "zero"s were allowed to make it back to the Tasks force headed to Pearl , could you imagine that conversation.....How would a 1941 Japanese pilot even comprehend what he saw let alone try and describe it to his superiors. ..
